(20 points) Reform, from the sixteenth century forward, had come to mean religious as well as social improvement, and it became the stated aim of the English government to bring all elements of the Irish population to an acceptance of the Protestant faith. The logic of what had been decided in relation to the Gaelic Irish meant that a Protestant evangelization drive would have to be deferred, pending a forceful restructuring of their society. There was no such problem in relation to the descendants of the Anglo-Normans, the so-called Old English population of Ireland, because they (or most of them) had always been accepted as a civil people and, indeed, had been traditionally recognized as the upholders of the English interest in the country.
